*IPX5* is a water resistance rating, and when you see it on a speaker it tells you how well it handles water.
What IPX5 means:
- *IP* = Ingress Protection rating system
- *X* = No rating for dust/solid particles. The "X" means it wasn't tested or it's not relevant
- *5* = Protected against water jets
Specifically, *IPX5 = protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction*.
In real terms for a speaker:
1. *OK*: Rain, splashes, sweat, getting sprayed with a hose or shower
2. *Not OK*: Submerging it underwater, high-pressure jets, dropping it in a pool
For speakers, IPX5 is pretty common and good for:
- Outdoor use by the pool or beach
- Bathroom/kitchen use where it might get splashed
- Light rain during a picnic or bike ride.
