*Volvo XC90, XC60, V60, V90, V40, V50 Front & Rear Shocks –
Volvo uses different damper designs across P2, P3 and SPA/CMA platforms. Here’s how they’re built and what they do:
*Front Axle: MacPherson Strut System*
Used on all models listed: V40, V50, V60, V90, XC60, XC90.
*1. MacPherson Strut Assembly*
This is a structural damper. It replaces the upper control arm and carries lateral + longitudinal loads. The unit integrates:
- *Damper Cartridge*: Monotube or twin-tube gas/hydraulic unit that controls spring oscillation. Valved for rebound and compression.
- *Coil Spring*: Coaxial helical spring, color-coded by engine/trim weight. Progressive rate on SPA models for comfort + control.
- *Upper Strut Mount + Thrust Bearing*: Rubber isolated mount with a radial bearing. Allows the strut to rotate with steering etc
