Kerosene lamps have been used for centuries for lighting. They use kerosene, a petroleum-based fuel, to produce light using a wick or mantle. The glass chimney protects the flame and directs the light while containing soot.
Kerosene lamps were widely used in the 19th century before gas and electric lighting became common. While they are still used in some areas for lighting, they are also used in fire toys.
