Footing quality is everything. A cantilever puts overturning force on the posts. If the concrete pads are undersized or the driveway slab is thin, wind uplift will loosen or tilt the structure. This is the single most common failure. • Wind uplift on a wide unsupported arch is significant. Good installers add cross-bracing between posts and sometimes a discreet tie back into the building wall. • Cheap polycarbonate yellows and goes brittle in 3–5 years. Genuine UV-coated sheet (Lexan, Makrolon, or a reputable equivalent) with a 10-year warranty costs more but is worth it — and the UV-coated side must face up. Installers who fit it upside down are common. • Rust at welds and bolt holes if the coating is thin or scratched during installation. Insist on galvanised or properly powder-coated sections rather than site-painted mild steel.
